In the past few years, more women have filed suits to hold companies responsible for the toxicity of hair straighteners. These women include Amanda Su, Sabina Ghebremedhin, and Dana Rubik. In a recent NIH study, 33,000 women were followed for 11 years. During that time, 378 cases of uterine cancer were reported.

Amanda Su

In a recent lawsuit, Amanda Su, a hair straightener and curling iron user won a $1.5 million settlement against L’Oreal, the manufacturer of chemical hair straightening products. In 2000, when she was in third grade, chemical hair straightener lawsuit, Mitchell first began using hair straightening products. Later, she developed uterine cancer and underwent a hysterectomy to remove her uterus. Mitchell is now 32 and blames the chemical straightening products for her illness.

Uterine cancer is the most common form of gynecologic cancer in the United States, and the risk of developing the disease is highest in black women. A recent National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) study found that Black women used chemical hair straightening products significantly more than white women.

As a result, the lawsuit filed by Mitchell and others was an essential step toward ensuring the safety of hair straightening products and other hair care products.

The lawsuit against L’Oreal and other companies that manufacture chemical hair straightening products has been settled for $1.5 million. The settlement was reached in the summer of 2015. The settlement is the largest ever for a hair straightener user. The lawsuit includes four other hair straightening companies.

A study by the National Institutes of Health showed a link between using chemical straightening products and the risk of uterine cancer. Jenny Mitchell, a 32-year-old Missouri resident, filed a lawsuit against the companies and claimed that her exposure to chemical straightening products caused her uterine cancer. Mitchell had been using hair straightening products since 2000 and continued to use them until March 2022.

Dana Rubik

Dana Rebik, a former reporter at WGN-TV, has won a large settlement for hair straightener users. She joined the station in 2014 after working at ABC affiliates in Oregon and Seattle. She has won several awards from the Associated Press and Society of Professional Journalists and is a multiple Emmy nominee. Her investigative reports have helped tighten DUI laws, strengthen state daycare licensing regulations, and expose security vulnerabilities in the state prison system.

A National Institute of Health study showed a link between chemical hair straighteners and uterine cancer. The study involved 378 women, and those who used chemical hair relaxers were twice as likely to develop the disease as those who did not. WGN reached out to all of the companies named in the case to determine whether they were responsible for the increased cancer risk.

The settlement amounts to $90 million and has been awarded to tens of thousands of hair-straightener users. The suit is the first to sue manufacturers of hair-straightening products successfully. The case is currently being prosecuted in California but could extend to other states. Dana Rebik’s case aims to protect other hair-straightening users from the ill effects of hair-straightening products.
